Trend Analysis (start)

Ever notice when you're out to eat your menu probably now has a vegetarian section? Well thats because many main stream restaurants are starting to broaden there horizons and get herbivores of our generation to eat at their restaurant. A few examples of fast food restaurants that have currently upgraded their menu to suit the non meat eaters of generation are Burger King, Dunkin Donuts, and Subway. "In 2002 Burger King introduced the veggie burger, this burger contains a variety of vegetables, textured vegetable protein (Soy Protein Concentrate, Wheat Gluten, Water for hydration), egg whites, cooked brown rice (Water, Brown Rice), rolled oats, corn oil, calcium caseinate, soy sauce (Water, Soybeans, Salt, Wheat), onion powder, corn starch, salt, hydrolyzed corn, soy, and wheat protein, autolyzed yeast extract, natural flavors from non-meat sources, sugar, soy protein isolate, spices, garlic powder, dextrose, jalapeƱo pepper powder, celery extract. Contains egg, wheat, soy." Although this is not vegan friendly because it contains animal by products such as eggs and milk it is still a step in the right direction and

After taking English 90 I thought English 101 would be a breeze, but I was very wrong. During this class I was challenged to do many different styles of writing, and writing for different audiences. Some of the most challenging assignments were the proposal, the personal profile, and the trend analysis. Although these assignments were tough they taught me a lot and made me a much better writer. These assignments made me think outside the box and take the view point of someone else, and see how they would react to my writing. I also learend how to analyze scholarly articles and trends this was especially difficult for me becuase I had to really analyze what I was reading and pick out different important points and make sure I cited and referenced them correctly. All in all this class made me a more diverse and versatile writer as well as a better reader. The three peices of writing I chose were the proposal, the personal profile, and the application essay.

My first choice was my proposal on eating disorder awareness, and the reason I chose it was because it was a very personal topic and I wanted convey my message to the public. For this assignment I was asked to write about a serious but solvable problem in my community and provide examples of how I plan to try and solve this problem. This peice was challenging for me because I wanted to make my auidence aware of the severeness of my proposal with out telling them every detail about my own personal experience. I think after the revisions I achieved my goal and got my point across to the auidence. I added more details and evidence as well as statistics to make my paper more professional and understandable.

My second choice was the personal profile on my high school math teacher. I chose this piece because this teacher's story had such an influential impact on me, and so I wanted to share it with my readers. For this assignment I was asked to write a 500 to 700 word interview on a person of interest that would not only be interesting to me but to others also. It needed to be "a portrait in words" and I think I achieved that pretty well. I had a lot of quotations and feelings in my writing and I think added a lot of realism to my paper.

My third choice I chose my application essay. For this assignment I had to write a professional essay for a 4 year school or a scholarship. I wrote an application essay for Springfield College and  I think I did well on it because it showed I knew a lot about the school and I also told a story on why I chose my intended major. I blended my own story about visiting Springfield and what I knew about Springfield from their website. I felt my paper was very honest and people would be able to get to know a little bit about me through my writing.

All in all, this semester taught me a great deal about how to become a better writer and writing for different audiences and circumstances. This has been a great learning experience for me and I will continue to use the skills I learned from this 101 class throughout the rest of my college years and professional life.

Invisible Children

Pepper, Shayne. "Invisible children and the cyberactivist spectator." Nebula 6.4 (2009): 40+. Academic OneFile. Web. 17 Apr. 2012.

In his essay Pepper analyzes Invisible Children and their and cyberactivist movement. He gives a full background on the foundation and tells the reader what it’s all about. He shows how the Invisible Children founders spread their important message in new ways that no other foundations have done before. They took videos and posted them on Google Video and social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace. They developed their own website and let people know that just by watching the film they can become an activist. On every DVD came a list of things that the viewer could do to help the cause such as liking the videos on you tube, passing the DVD on to friend, donating money to the website, posting the video to your social networking profile, or wearing the merchandise to raise awareness.
This attracted thousands of young people and is still continuing to grow on the internet , but recently they have held events to raise awareness and donate money to the cuase. He talks about the use of internet to draw young people in which lead to a speedy awareness of the cuase. By watching the video so many people felt moved and wanted to give back. So the founders gave free and easy solutions that supporters could do right from their computer. This whole foundation was an example of cyberactivism. Everything done by the Invisible Children was done through the internet, they were a mixture of Internet-enahanced and Internet-based."(3) Since cyberactivism could mean anything from creating a website for breast cancer awareness to hacking state department computers in China to protest human rights violations, Sandor Vegh has created useful categories in which to think about cyberactivism. He separates strategies as either Internet-enhanced or Internet-based. Vegh distinguishes the two by stating that Internet-enhanced strategies "are only used to enhance the traditional advocacy techniques, for example, as an additional communication channel, by raising awareness beyond the scope possible before the Internet, or by coordinating action more efficiently." On the other hand, Internet-based strategies are "only possible online, like a virtual sit-in or hacking into target web sites."

Eating Disorders
In todays society there is so much stress on young people to look a certain way. Media is constantly putting out the idea that if you aren’t thin or in perfect shape; you are not beautiful. So girls and even young men feel a lot of pressure to be in ideal shape, and are taking dangerous risks to look the way they want. Eating disorders are becoming more and more common with teens and young adults-1 in 6 girls have developed some sort of eating disorder by the time they reach their sophomore year if high school.
I know this from a personal experience. My sister struggled to look perfect all through high school. She was a perfectionist to an extreme, and she would throw up after every meal. She lost 20 lbs in 3 months and no one noticed. She had a serious case of bulimia and body dysmorphic disorder.  Body dysmorphic disorder is a disorder that causes you to see your body differently than it actually is, and most of the time it’s in a negative view. She thought she was much larger than she actually was, so as soon as my family found out we got her help. She started going to therapy and slowly realized that its okay to not be extremely skinny, and you need to be comfortable in your own skin and that’s what makes a person beautiful.
Although she still has doubts about the way she looks she found healthy alternatives to lose weight and get fit. Dieting and exercise can make you so much healthier and help you look fit and beautiful. I believe that people should talk about  this with their friends, families, and students, and let them know it’s okay to not be a size zero! Confidence and being comfortable with yourself is what makes you beautiful!

The Miracle Woman
A tall, thin, happy, energetic woman with a bob haircut stood in front of me in my pre-calculus class senior year. Her name was Mrs. Kelley and she was a miracle. “What a beautiful prayer that was today” she said as her eyes filled with tears. “It reminds me that if you have faith and you believe you can do it you will!” she paused, and then went on to tell us she had three brain tumors and all three cancerous.  “I remember the first time I went in for surgery I waited with my husband and remember thinking to myself I can do this, I can do this. They called me to an elevator to go upstairs to the operation room as I went in the elevator with a few other people I remember getting very nervous. And as soon as I stepped out of the elevator I thought to myself ‘Paula what are you doing’. I was running towards the door, when a security guard stopped me and said ‘Ma’am where do you think you’re going?’ I started to break down. I told him I can’t do this I need to get out of here I can’t do it! ‘Yes you can’ he said ‘you need to’. He walked me down the hall to my room where I waited, the doctor came in and the next thing I knew I was awake and my husband was with me.”  She was sobbing as she told us her story, and I remember thinking she was one of the bravest people I had ever met. She survived three large brain tumors when doctors told her there was a good chance she could come out not knowing a thing, unable to recognize people, or being unable to move and feel parts of her body. “I worked through it all I prayed every day and went to church every Sunday, and I do believe god helped me through all this. How am I lucky enough to survive 3 brain tumors and come out completely fine when doctors said I would be like a vegetable?”  She smiled and looked at all of us and said “Never take your lives for granted and always be the best you can be because one day it will all be worth it.” Those words stayed with me, and I’ll never forget the huge impact Mrs. Kelley had on my life. She was great teacher and an excellent person I hope to be as optimistic and caring as she is.
