Trend Analysis (start)
Ever notice when you're out to eat your menu probably now has a vegetarian section? Well thats because many main stream restaurants are starting to broaden there horizons and get herbivores of our generation to eat at their restaurant. A few examples of fast food restaurants that have currently upgraded their menu to suit the non meat eaters of generation are Burger King, Dunkin Donuts, and Subway. "In 2002 Burger King introduced the veggie burger, this burger contains a variety of vegetables, textured vegetable protein (Soy Protein Concentrate, Wheat Gluten, Water for hydration), egg whites, cooked brown rice (Water, Brown Rice), rolled oats, corn oil, calcium caseinate, soy sauce (Water, Soybeans, Salt, Wheat), onion powder, corn starch, salt, hydrolyzed corn, soy, and wheat protein, autolyzed yeast extract, natural flavors from non-meat sources, sugar, soy protein isolate, spices, garlic powder, dextrose, jalapeƱo pepper powder, celery extract. After taking English 90 I thought English 101 would be a breeze, but I was very wrong. During this class I was challenged to do many different styles of writing, and writing for different audiences. Some of the most challenging assignments were the proposal, the personal profile, and the trend analysis. Although these assignments were tough they taught me a lot and made me a much better writer. These assignments made me think outside the box and take the view point of someone else, and see how they would react to my writing. I also learend how to analyze scholarly articles and trends this was especially difficult for me becuase I had to really analyze what I was reading and pick out different important points and make sure I cited and referenced them correctly. All in all this class made me a more diverse and versatile writer as well as a better reader. The three peices of writing I chose were the proposal, the personal profile, and the application essay.
My first choice was my proposal on eating disorder awareness, and the reason I chose it was because it was a very personal topic and I wanted convey my message to the public. For this assignment I was asked to write about a serious but solvable problem in my community and provide examples of how I plan to try and solve this problem. This peice was challenging for me because I wanted to make my auidence aware of the severeness of my proposal with out telling them every detail about my own personal experience. I think after the revisions I achieved my goal and got my point across to the auidence. I added more details and evidence as well as statistics to make my paper more professional and understandable.
My second choice was the personal profile on my high school math teacher. I chose this piece because this teacher's story had such an influential impact on me, and so I wanted to share it with my readers. For this assignment I was asked to write a 500 to 700 word interview on a person of interest that would not only be interesting to me but to others also. It needed to be "a portrait in words" and I think I achieved that pretty well. I had a lot of quotations and feelings in my writing and I think added a lot of realism to my paper.
My third choice I chose my application essay. For this assignment I had to write a professional essay for a 4 year school or a scholarship. I wrote an application essay for Springfield College and I think I did well on it because it showed I knew a lot about the school and I also told a story on why I chose my intended major. I blended my own story about visiting Springfield and what I knew about Springfield from their website. I felt my paper was very honest and people would be able to get to know a little bit about me through my writing.
All in all, this semester taught me a great deal about how to become a better writer and writing for different audiences and circumstances. This has been a great learning experience for me and I will continue to use the skills I learned from this 101 class throughout the rest of my college years and professional life.
